As a Dentist working close to the University of Alberta a large portion of our patient base is young adults. At this age it is time to talk about wisdom teeth. One of the most common questions is:
“Why do I need my Wisdom Teeth Removed?”
Great question. Over the past few centuries human jaws have been trending towards being smaller than their predecessors, which results in a mouth too small to accommodate all of one’s teeth. Since the wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt into the mouth they often do not have enough room. This results in the teeth becoming impacted (unable to erupt). A number of possible complications can arise around these teeth: infection/abscess formation, periodontal disease (bone and gum disease), adjacent tooth cavities, orthodontic shifting (teeth crowding) and many more. Therefore, wisdom teeth are often removed to avoid or fix these problems.
It is wise to talk to your Dentist in detail about whether removal of your wisdom teeth is necessary and we welcome your questions in this regard.
