When a tooth or multiple teeth are lost due to decay, periodontal infection, or for other reasons such as trauma, dental implants are an excellent solution to their replacement.
A dental implant acts to replace the root of a lost tooth. The implant itself is usually a titanium alloy material resembling a screw-like shape. In a surgical procedure, the implant is placed into the jaw bone where the missing teeth once occupied.
How long does it take for an implant?
The treatment period for an implant can vary from 6 months to a year or more depending on many factors such as your overall oral health, the number of teeth requiring replacement, and whether or not an extraction is needed before the implant surgery.
A typical single implant surgery usually takes about one to two hours to complete, after which the implant is usually left to heal for a period of 3-4 months. During this interim period, a temporary prosthesis can be made to fill the space for the missing tooth until the implant is ready for final restoration.
After the healing period, the implant is checked for stability and then can be restored with a tooth-colored crown which looks and feels like a natural tooth. This new implant crown can be brushed and flossed normally and will enable the patient to once again eat, chew, talk and smile as they did before!
Does the implant surgery hurt?
Implant surgeries and performed under local anesthesia similar to when a tooth filling is performed. In some situations oral and intravenous sedation can also be used. Therefore most patients report minimal discomfort during the implant surgery. Post-surgical healing is often quicker and much less painful than a typical tooth extraction. Medications are also usually prescribed after the surgery to minimize any discomfort that may arise.
Overall, dental implants have very high success rates and as such, they represent the gold standard for the replacement of a single missing tooth.
