BOTOX® In Dentistry

BOTOX® is a natural purified protein that is used to temporarily relax muscles. In the past, it’s use in dentistry has been focused on relaxing overactive muscles around the jaw joint that cause chronic pain. However, in recent years Alberta dentists’ scope of practice has broadened to include the administration of BOTOX® and dermal fillers for esthetic reasons. This allows dentists with special training to target muscles around the mouth, face, and neck, changing not only the look of a smile but also of the rest of the face.

Historically, the widespread use of BOTOX® for cosmetic reasons began in 1995. Since then many other uses have been discovered, including the treatment of excessive sweating, Blepharospasm (uncontrolled eye twitching), Migraines, Carpal Tunnel, Incontinence, and Depression. Botox, when used to improve esthetics, falls into the category of “Facial Rejuvenation”, along with other procedures such as Dermabrasion and Dermal Fillers. When properly administered, it relaxes overactive muscles that cause wrinkles, creating a smoothed, improved, and more youthful appearance.

Most people are surprised to learn their dentist administers BOTOX® because in the past only medical professionals where qualified. However dentists feel that their understanding of facial anatomy and proficiency with injections makes them ideal BOTOX® providers. Patients who are concerned about their dental health and their smile also care about the way they look. Adding BOTOX® to scheduled dental hygiene appointments can simplify things by eliminating the need to visit another clinic on a regular basis.

BOTOX® is one of the most widely used Facial Rejuvenation procedures in North America. It works by temporarily relaxing muscles that cause wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyebrows (frown lines), lateral to the eye (crow’s feet), smile lines, and other areas of the mid-face and neck. Dentists use a very tiny (30gu) syringe to inject small amounts of BOTOX® just below the skin in specific areas of the face. This technique is comfortable and reduces the chance of bleeding and bruising. It allows patients to go about the rest of their day without others knowing injections where just administered. Full results are seen within the first 10-14 days, and typically last 3-4 months. Before and after photos are taken to help identify areas that should be treated and to show final results.
